Poetry of the Protest – Part I – Darryl Ratcliff      poetry

Capacity 12

Poetry has the power to give voice to the voiceless, power to the powerless, delight, problematize, confuse, and give shape to the things that make us uncomfortable. This workshop will investigate how poetry is a form of protest that is both individual and political.  Topics may include anything and everything not acceptable for polite dinner conversation.  We will also (probably) write a lot of poetry.

T- Shirt Printing – Brother Raphaeltshirtprinting

Capacity 8

Alrighty then! Let’s print that t-shirt design of yours. We will use the photo-emulsion method to burn your image onto a silkscreen and proceed to print. One (1) t-shirt will be provided per student; students may bring additional shirts/apparel of their own (higher cotton blend recommended).

Submit your black & white design to Br. Raphael by April 18th at the latest.

Dramatizing Myths – Dylan Keydkey

Hand Drumming & Ethnic Percussion – Jamal Mohamed     handdrumming

Capacity 21

Percussion Professor Jamal Mohammed comes to us from SMU as a veteran performer and instructor of world music.  Learn more about him at www.jamalmohamed.com.  He will lead you in an interactive drum circle using percussion instruments from a variety of cultures.  He will provide the instruments but feel free to bring your own percussion instruments.

Painting Portraits – Father Ignatius    iggy

Capacity 10

We will paint a portrait based on a photograph. You don’t have to be able to draw. We will trace the contours and features of the face from the photograph and then paint. Bring photos of yourself, or your best friend, or someone else whom you would like to paint. The person’s face should take up most of the space on an 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper. No small photos. Keep in mind we will be drawing on top of the photo, so don’t bring photos on photographic paper, but just normal printer paper. Ideally you should bring two photos – one in color, the other not in color. If your photo is too small or doesn’t work, then you should use a photo I bring.

DaVerse Lounge – The Power of Voice – Will Richey    daverse

Capacity 20

DaVerse Lounge is an under 21 open mic creative experience that has grown throughout North Texas over the last decade.  Audiences are engaged through an infectious call and response approach to the Art of the Spoken Word as expressed through original stories, poetry and song.  In this workshop participants will be invited to become instruments themselves through various rhythms and vocalized mantras while also leading writing and performance activities that will culminate in a group share.

Dijeradu – Casey Smith       dieradu

Capacity 12

Recreate the ancient Australian instrument which sounds like a foghorn, using plastic pipe, a blowtorch, a drill and heated wax.  Decorate to your heart’s content with carving and color.

Guerilla Video – Jim Reisch  gorila

Capacity 9

In this workshop, teams of quick hitting “guerilla” video filmmakers will slip into each workshop to capture all the action taking place.  Each team will be provided with a digital video camera, shoot footage, then return to the school’s Digital Video Lab where they will download and edit their material into a high energy, short film accompanied by a musical soundtrack they will also piece together.  Participants should bring music selections on a USB drive to the workshop.  No previous video or editing experience is necessary – but definitely a plus!

Improv – David Patrickimprov

We will focus on improv warm ups, games and explore techniques for developing scenes based on audience suggestions.  We will also learn some of the tricks of the improv trade such as creating physical objects, starting an improv scene, and choreographing a scene without rehearsing.  You will learn to think quickly on your feet, improve your storytelling skills, and oh yeah, have a lot of fun!

A New Landscape: Color, Texture and Pattern  – Terry Hays

Capacity 15

The students will explore the different colors, textures and patterns that they see daily in their urban and rural landscapes. Creating colored drawings on paper the students explore their architectural and botanical surroundings by introducing patterns and textures to the world they see daily. Becoming more sensitive to and aware of the subtle beauty of their immediate surroundings will hopefully bring a new and personal approach to their art, while also providing a new and refreshing look at the world that is around them every day.

Painting As Mud & Metaphor – Kimberly Alexander  paitningmud
